Commentary

This artwork is a ceramic relief, created by recreating original paintings stored in the atelier of the late AMATSU Kei, an artist associated with Nagoya City.
Motifs such as the sun and cityscapes, seen in Amatsu's works, praised as the "Magician of Color," are depicted in dynamic color schemes based on reds and yellows. Furthermore, by combining "fish" swimming in the open sea spreading from Kinjo Pier in Nagoya Port and "birds" symbolizing the tidal flats, a stopover point for migratory birds, the energetic development of Kinjo Pier toward the future is expressed.

Mayor of Nagoya
HIROSAWA Ichiro
We are pleased to announce the installation of the ceramic relief "The Sun and the Flying Port Town," a recreation of original artwork by the late AMATSU Kei, an internationally acclaimed artist from Nagoya, at Kinjō-futō Station on the Nagoya Rinkai Rapid Transit Aonami Line, thanks to the cooperation of the Japan Traffic Culture Association.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Amatsu family and all those involved in the production and installation of this artwork.
Kinjo-futo is connected to Nagoya Station and surrounding areas by rail and expressway, serving as an exchange hub visited by many people for its leading exhibition hall, museums featuring high-speed railway technology, and a theme park filled with the charm of block toys. It also harmonizes its role as a logistics base responsible for Japan's top automobile exports.
This artwork, based on the vividly colored original paintings of the sun and cityscapes by Mrs. AMATSU, praised as the "Magician of Color," incorporates "fish" swimming in the sea viewed from Kinjō-futō Station and "birds" visiting the tidal flats, a stopover point for migratory birds, expressing the energetic development and soaring of the Kinjō-futō Station area toward the future.
We hope that this artwork will be embraced as a new symbol of Kinjō-futō Station, welcoming visitors from both domestic and international locations for business and leisure, and contribute to enhancing the attractiveness of the station area for many years to come.

I am delighted to celebrate the installation of the public art ceramic panel relief, "The Sun and the Flying Port Town," based on original artwork by the late AMATSU Kei, a native of Nagoya, at Kinjō-futō Station on the Nagoya Rinkai Rapid Transit Aonami Line.
Mrs. AMATSU, known as the "Magician of Color," is renowned for his unique style of dynamically patchworking colors, primarily reds. This time, Creare Atami Yugawara Studio (Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture) combined several of his works to create the original painting, which was then transformed into a ceramic panel relief.
The Kinjō-futō Station area, home to event facilities such as the International Exhibition Hall, the Linear Railway Museum, and Legoland, opens broadly towards the sea, and the bright, vibrant artwork symbolizes the future of this growing district. Migratory birds visiting the tidal flats and the rich sea life of the surrounding waters are also depicted in the work.
The studio staff made numerous adjustments to the glaze mixture to replicate the colors of the original painting. Additionally, given the location, the artwork could not be made too thick, so the form was ingeniously crafted to create a sense of depth. The studio's long-standing techniques and know-how have been fully invested in this piece.
For over half a century, I have been installing brick art nationwide with the aim of "making public spaces comfortable places," and this is my 561st work. I extend my sincere gratitude to Mr. AMATSU Atsushi, the son of AMATSU Kei, for graciously granting permission to use his mother's artwork, to the Japan Lottery Association for their support, to Nagoya Rinkai Rapid Transit Co., Ltd. for providing this wonderful location, and to all the related parties for their cooperation.
