Osamu ShinoharaLandscape DesignerEven on cloudy, rainy, or even snowy days, once you break through the cloud cover, the sky is always clear blue. The clear skies all around seem to call out to us to put aside the sorrows, doubts, and anxieties of our daily lives. Brief as such an interlude might be, that bracing blue of heaven gives us strength.

The Narita International Airport is the major gateway used by more than half of airline passengers traveling in and out of Japan. We are happy to announce the launching of Narita Sky Access, a brand new rapid railway service between central Tokyo and Narita airport.
In the design and construction of the Terminal 1 and terminal 2 stations as well as the Narita Yukawa Station midway between the airport and the city, special care has been taken to present a good impression of Japanese culture to foreign visitors who have just arrived in Japan. Works of public art made with stained glass and ceramic relief on themes featuring the world, Japan, and clouds have been installed. Openings to guide passengers between the two platforms, called "optical gates," are designed using Japanese traditional paper and lacquer. With the support and cooperation of all those involved in these projects, we have been able to make these railway stations into culturally attractive facilities.
Soon after departing the Narita Airport Station (Terminal 1 Station), visitors from overseas looking out the train windows will pass through a scenic landscape of rice fields and the major wetland area known as Inba Marsh. The elevated tracks for the line have been designed to allow passengers to enjoy this beautiful landscape to the full. In the design of Narita Yukawa Station and station plaza seen from surrounding areas as well as of the elevated tracks that blend into the Inba Marsh landscape, Narita Sky Access has sought to achieve infrastructure that would not only be pleasant for passengers but also attractive to people living along the line. While construction costs had to be kept down, we have done our best to achieve something that approach "art" by installing works at public spaces we hope you will enjoy.
