Japanese-style Painter

Yokoyama Taikan (1868-1937) was born in Ibaraki Prefecture. He entered the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (current Tokyo University of The Arts) in 1889, and studied under the tutelage of Okakura Tenshin. After graduation, he worked on the creation of new Japanese paintings from the Meiji through the Showa eras, and brought innovation to modern Japanese paintings. He received the first Order of Culture.
