Professor emeritus at Kyoto Seika University, director of the Japan Cartoonists Association, and president of The Japan Society for Studies in Cartoons and Comics (JSSCC, Nihon manga gakkai) .
She made her professional debut as a cartoonist in 1968. Her "Kaze To Ki no Uta (Poem of Wind and Trees)" (1976-84), which focused on boys' love, was a masterpiece of human drama and had a great impact on the subsequent world of girls' manga. In addition, she has created many other representative works on a wide range of themes, including the science fiction manga "TOWARD THE TERRA " and "Tenma no Ketsuzoku ". Winner of the 9th Nebula Award for Comics, the 25th Shogakukan Manga Award, and the 41st Japan Cartoonists Association Award, Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award, she was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 2014, and the Tokushima Prefecture Cultural Award in 2020.
