This stained glass picture based on the original painting by Japanese painter, Mr. HIRAMATSU Reiji who is called Modern Rimpa, meaning the modern disciple of the traditional Rimpa school of the Japanese painting originated in the 16th century, was mounted under his supervision on the walls of the Shimbashi station of the New Transportation System “Yurikamome”.
The work consists of three panels set as if parts of a traditional folding screen. As such, it makes good use of the corner space of the escalator and stairs between the station platform and the west exit of the New Transportation System.
The central picture depicts the summer sea with Mt. Fuji in the background. On the left side are pictures of plum and cherry blossoms in the spring, and on the right side you see their bright autumnal colors. They are expressed in novel colors with a bold decorative technique. The seagull spreading its wings is the symbolic bird of metropolitan Tokyo as well as the name given to this new transportation system--“Yurikamome”. Different expressions of this triptych can be experienced depending on the angle of the sunlight illuminating it.
