Louis FRANSENPublic Art Artist (Mural, Stained Glass, etc.)Akishima City and Fussa City, where you know spring has come by touching warm water of Tama River, and you feel autumn by watching autumn leaves at Tamagawa Aqueduct, are areas with full of peace and moisture surrounded by beautiful landscapes of rich water and green, and located in Musashino Terrace. Haijima station free passage is a place to connect Akishima City (South Exit) and Fussa City (North Exit).
For the stained glass that is installed at Haijima station, I set the rich and clean flow of Tama River as a whole theme. Since the River is flowing through both cities, I show the landscape of the sunrise from the River and "Akishima Whale" on the stained glass at Akishima City side as a whale fossil was found in 1961 in this area.
Haijima station is an important transportation node in this area. Many people come and go at the station for any purpose. Under such circumstances, in order to make the impression strongly left to those who see this stained glass, I made it a structure with a contemporary big flow. I thought about the design that made the best use of the beauty of the antique glass which is made by hand one by one, and that made people who see it feel the lively joy.
I hope that this stained glass becomes the symbol of Haijima Station, and the light inserting through the stained glass creates a beautiful colored space, which gently welcomes people coming and going at the station.
The whole theme is "Beautiful flow of Tama River = Rich and pure water flow" flowing both in Akishima City and Fussa City, and the artwork at Akishima City side consists of motifs such as "sunrise situation" and "Akishima whale", and expresses the image of the city. The screen is composed of dynamic and large flow which remains in the impression of those who come and go through the passage (not those who stop and look at it carefully), making it a work fully utilizing the beauty of glare reflection by natural light.
