Katsuhiko HibinoArtist, Dean of Faculty of Fine Arts and Professor at Intermedia Art Department, Tokyo University of the ArtsSince Tokyu Capitol Tower (its tenants are The Capitol Hotel Tokyu, etc), which was supervised and designed by Kengo Kuma, is proud of its Japanese garden, I drew a picture with a stepping stone to be connected with it, and made a pottery from it. In the process of making the pottery from the picture, there was one thing which I stuck to or played on. It was a plot to express the corrugated paper expression also on the pottery, since the base on which the picture was drawn is corrugated paper. Talking with the staff of the studio variously, we tried to do that by reproducing the edge of corrugated paper, the soft part on the other hand, or small wavelike part with soil. Although the work was with a heavy texture at the clay stage, it turned out to be a good work with the texture of pottery while expressing the texture of corrugated paper after painting and baking.
The Capitol Hotel Tokyu will open newly in Tokyu Capitol Tower on October 22, 2010. This place, where there was Hoshioka Saryo opened by Rosanjin in the old days, is the place where tradition and modernity meet, since it is adjacent to the rich greenery of Hie Shrine, while being in the center of the big city Tokyo.
The public art "Bubble (utakata)" expressing the fusion of tradition and modernity was installed in front of the underground entrance of Tokyu Capitol Tower (near Exit 5 at Tokyo Metro Tameike-sanno Station). Mr. Katsuhiko Hibino, who is the original drawer and supervisor, expressed the texture of the original drawing made in corrugated paper by using ceramic which is a permanent and traditional Japanese material. The encounter of two different things, contemporary design and ceramic with rich and calming touch, connects people who go through this place.
